Congestion
Generator Extraordinaire
Fishwick Island is a congestion generating island on the outskirts of Brookwood, Surrey. It is twinned with Sao Paulo, Brazil, infamously known as the most congested city in the world. Have you experienced any of the following? Been unable to join the filter lane as the through lane towards Guildford is blocked and you wait another full cycle of the lights. Witnessed a frustrated driver illegally go round the island the wrong side. Been unable to progress through the lights towards Guildford because the queue of traffic waiting to turn into Brookwood blocks the through lane. Witnessed the through lane towards Guildford blocked as someone is waiting to turn into the petrol station, and the traffic flow travelling in the Bagshot direction doesn't let up. Visiting
Information
First discovered on 20 March 2010, the uninhabited Fishwick Island is located in the middle of the A322, Bagshot Road, opposite the Total garage, and near the infamous Brookwood Traffic Lights. The island is small, measuring about eight foot by four foot. It is possible to see the whole island in less than a day. The island cannot be reached by car (yet), although it is certain that at some point in the future, someone will try. Probably at speed, and you should hope you are not visiting the island at the time. The island is best approached by either bicycle or on foot. The island was primarily designed as part of a 'desire line', although some cyclists have reported the island is too small. It is suggested that you do not use a tandem cycle to visit the island. The island is wheel chair friendly, assuming you are able to navigate the immediate approach routes which can be hazardous especially at certain times of the day. There is a very small range of sand stone mountains, not very high and easily climbable within a day. There are no refreshments on the island, although a Mace store in the Total garage has a selection of groceries and confectionary items. Further afield, The Hunter's Lodge is a public house on the A322. Within the delightful village of Brookwood (which is slowly being ruined by our very own public servants), is the Brookwood Hotel, a bakers, a butcher, Post Office and other local shops and services. |
